FINALLY braided my hair! It was my first time ever doing my own individuals & it took, literally, 4 days off & on because I had class, work, etc. I’m trying to learn how to do certain things for myself (read: tired of giving away my money). There are a few that I have to redo but I’m happy with the overall result.

i was at autozone, today, picking up some things for my car and received a compliment from the guy helping me. our conversation went as follows:

him: what’s your ethnicity?

me: black.

him: really? you aren’t mixed with anything?

me: nope. juuuuuust black :) why do you ask?

him: it’s just that you have a really pretty face.

me: thank you. *finishes transaction, walks out the store*

i wonder what he meant by that…. maybe i’m reading a little too far into it. but it’s not uncommon for some to say black women are only pretty if they’re mixed. i’ve heard it too many times over the years and people seem surprised when the “pretty black girl” doesn’t claim any other ethnic group but black. is the idea of a beautiful/attractive black woman far-fetched?

Being cordial does not mean you’re being fake, you’re just acting as though you have some sense like a mature adult should. I’m not with all the sneaky-sneaky behavior, either. It’s a shame women of my generation (20-somethings & such) aren’t used to being treated with respect. When I was younger, I thought a respectable, caring, considerate, selfless young man was a mythical creature. You know, along the lines of Big Foot, the Chupacabra, Lochness Monster and George Clooney. But then, I met him. He’s the best! Treats me like the lady I am. It’s possible to find a prince in a world of slimy toads. For the women who are constantly shouting at the top of their lungs, “All men are dogs”: untrue. You have to stop shouting in order to hear the gentlemen through the barking dogs.
